The last member of the family, Colonel John Leicester Warren, died in 1975 unmarried and an only-child. As per his will the entire estate was then bequeathed to the national trust, but unfortunately they refused. The new hall was quickly snapped up for private use as a school due to its ongoing grandeur, but this was the nail in the coffin for the old hall. Half a century later and we now see a sobering example of what most of our listed heritage buildings in Britain would look like were they to have been refused the care of the national trust or for it to not exist at all. The old hall was finally designated as a Grade II listed building in 1984, but it is now extremely unlikely that the remains of Tabley Old Hall will survive much longer, with its timber supports themselves starting to give way, this truly is heritage disappearing before our eyes.
