George Gleave’s bridge is the first to span the canal in Keckwick. Possibly my favourite bridge on the route due to how entirely unkept and at one with nature it is. It was named after a man whose family lived at Crow’s Nest for many years. His descendent, another George, was a surgeon in Warrington. It was built in 1772 by James Brindley for the Duke of Bridgewater as an accommodation bridge for when land was marked on maps simply by the landowner’s name. The adjacent fields here would simply have been marked as ‘George Gleave’s Land’.
