In 1998 a pupil suffered a broken arm while being restrained by three members of staff, prompting the police to investigate allegations made by a further 86 pupils, mainly surrounding the use of excessive force when using restraint techniques. The school, which then had 101 day and residential students with a range of behavioural and emotional difficulties, did eventually reopen but by this time the damage was done and it closed down permanently less than a decade later in 2006.
