At this rate it’s hardly surprising to find out that Carlauren was playing the investors for fools. At around £164k per unit, investors were under the impression that the return would keep on coming following the restoration of the building, but it never happened. Not only that, but they even sold more rooms than the building actually had. Carlauren did this at 23 comparable properties within the UK – all pitched to buyers as care properties or hotels. Resulting in £76m of buyers’ money being collected, and not a single one ever operating as a care dwelling.
