Then & Now

1828-2024. The Crown Hotel, also known as the Crown Inn, is a timber-framed, black-and-white hotel and public house located at 24 High Street in the town of Nantwich in Cheshire, England. The present building dates from shortly after 1583, when it was built on the site of the original 'Crowne' destroyed in the Great Fire of Nantwich of 1583, which originated in a brewery and destroyed the majority of the town's timber buildings. One of three buildings in Nantwich to be listed at grade I, it is said to have been constructed on an earlier industrial site, including a medieval tannery and an 11th century salt working, and has also been speculated to have been the location of Nantwich Castle. Today it still functions as an inn, with a restaurant and public house at ground level. The old construction method of lining the interior walls with wattle and daub can be viewed on display in the reception of the building, and despite much of the building having warped due to it's own weight, it is completely structurally sound. Original image is a painting for obvious reasons given the date, so the perspective is slightly off for the image.
